Designing a cover is an exercise in creating visual concept and narrative. You will need to concept and develop two covers for an issue of the magazine. You will design three covers for the same article. One type based, one graphic based, and one photo based.
Find an existing article / feature story to use for this project about a topic that you find interesting. Must be a long form article or feature.

Choose Article / Issue (must be a feature from NYT magazine) Ideally get your article approved before you leave class today so you make sure you are on the right track.
Research / Concept Mapping / Word Lists / Etc. (Concept is king here!) Go deep and beyond the obvious. You will thank yourself when you start sketching.
(3) Moodboards for style and concept for your art. Think about how can tease your article without giving everything away? Also think beyond visuals here. How can you connect conceptually?

Use the weekend to explore ideas and experiement. Fully build out and explore your ideas. Don't build everything the same way and think about what makes sense for your concept?
